Subject: Headunit Connection in your Cars
Hi G & K,
The headunits on the Cars which have been installed by your PDI personnel, can be turned on even without the insertion of the key. This is most likely due to a wrong connection in the power cables.
I have installed the headunit in my car in accordance to the wiring diagram attached. Our headunit can only be turned on when the key is inserted and switched to ACC position.
Typically this is how the wiring looks like behind a headunit
A close-up of the wiring
The main wires to power up the headunit is as follows:
Black: connected to ground
Red: ACC. This will only output 12V when the key is turned to ACC position. At OFF position, the red lead does not supply any voltage
Yellow: Main power line (+12V)
Orange: Dimmer function
A correctly connected HU will respond as follows:
Key at OFF / No key inserted: HU is permanently off
Key at ACC or ON: HU can operate
What has happened to the installation done by your PDI guys: the red and yellow leads are shorted together. Hence the HU can operate regardless of the key position.
The grave consequence of this action: the car battery can be prematurely drained when the owner forgets to turn off the headunit after the engine is stopped.
Please highlight this problem to your PDI personnel. If you have any queries, feel free to contact me.
Regards

Subject: FW: Headunit Connection in your Cars
Hi K,T
The picture shown in the e-mail below is an "Alpine" radio which is not fitted in the PDI. Please check with your SF on how this car ended up with this brand of radio. Please also inform this customer that there will be no warranty for this radio, as he suggests that it was fitted at the PDI which is not correct.
Regards,
J.F
